Lens focus no more

What if you could take a photograph with a tight zoom so you are focused on a subject. Then after you have taken the picture, decide that you wanted to focus on another part of the picture instead. Within the digital data you would be able to rack focus and actually see other planes of the image. There is research being done on this technology using prototype plenoptic cameras.
